Test instruments & GS38

  1. Test instruments: safe isolation and trustworthy readingsChoose the instrument for the task, establish a safe test condition and recognise a suspect reading.

Continuity testing

  1. Continuity: ring readings and parallel pathsInterpret low-resistance measurements without mistaking an alternative path for a sound conductor.

Insulation resistance & polarity

  1. Insulation resistance and polarity: separate decisionsSelect a suitable insulation test and understand what a high resistance reading cannot prove.

Loop impedance & fault current

  1. Loop impedance: work the check before judging the resultCombine valid evidence, compare the right limit and keep fault current separate from RCD sensitivity.

RCD & functional testing

  1. RCD testing: verification and extra diagnosticsDistinguish the required operating-time check from additional tests chosen to investigate a problem.

Certification & periodic

  1. Certificates and condition reports: record the right evidenceMatch the document to the work and distinguish a recommendation from an unsafe condition.

Explain what an electrical test result establishes

For inspection and testing questions, identify the test, the instrument setup and the expected evidence before judging the result. Keep observations, measurements and conclusions separate. A single acceptable reading does not complete an inspection or establish the condition of every circuit.

Use the 18th Edition notes to revisit the protective measures being verified. Match your revision plan to the particular qualification and assessment route you are taking; a short practice session cannot demonstrate practical testing competence.

When preparing an inspection or condition report, compare the role of Guidance Note 3 with BS 7671. Work through the Amendment 4 EICR example to see how the edition used affects the reporting decision.
