Plumbing has two things employers look at: knowledge and competence. The Level 2 (and later Level 3) Diploma proves the theory — cold water, hot water, central heating, drainage and safety — while an NVQ proves you can do the work to standard on real sites. Most people need both, and the on-site part is what turns a certificate into a job. Start with the everyday systems and build up: cold water and field diagnostics first, then hot water and central heating, then drainage. Two topics carry extra weight because they are safety-critical and come up again and again — the Water Regulations (fluid categories and backflow) and G3 unvented hot water (expansion, relief valves and safe discharge). Level 2 is the foundation most learners start with; Level 3 adds design and diagnosis depth — heat-loss and sizing calculations, hot-water storage and low-carbon fuels.
