The 18th Edition exam is City & Guilds 2382, the Level 3 Award in the Requirements for Electrical Installations: a test of how well you can find and apply BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations. Its current version, 2382-26, is set on BS 7671:2018+A4:2026, with 60 multiple-choice questions to answer in two hours and a paper copy of the book open in front of you. The questions above practise that skill, with an explanation behind every answer.

The paper ranges across the whole standard, but protection for safety and selection and erection supply almost half of it. These original questions mix definitions, protective measures, device selection, cable factors and verification: read the condition in the question before choosing the figure or the rule.
Shock protection is the spine. Separate basic protection, fault protection and additional protection, then tie each to the system type in front of you. A TT installation relies on its own electrode and an RCD; a PME supply combines neutral and earth in the network and needs larger main bonding. Explain why the disconnection time or bonding size in a question follows from that arrangement.
18th Edition notesPractise the coordination chain from design current to device rating to cable capacity, and the factors that shrink a cable’s capacity: grouping, ambient temperature and thermal insulation. For RCDs, match the device type to the residual current it must detect rather than to the circuit name.
Cable and device notesKnow the dead-test order and the test voltage and minimum value for insulation resistance, then the documents each activity produces. Bathroom zones come up constantly because the boundaries are geometric and easy to test: work outwards from zone 0, noting which IP rating, supply and accessories each zone permits.
Bath and shower zonesCity & Guilds publishes how the 60 questions are spread across the book. Parts 4 and 5 supply 29 of them between them, so they deserve about half your revision time; the definitions in Part 2 supply two. Part 8 and the appendices are worth eight, so practise finding your way around the appendix tables as well as the regulations.

A mock is a diagnostic, not a score to collect. Sit it once cold to find the gaps, then work the gaps, then sit it again. Repeating the same set until the number goes up mostly measures familiarity with the questions.
Because the real assessment is open-book, practise with the book. Two hours for 60 questions is two minutes each, so time how long it takes you to locate a regulation. For a figure such as a disconnection time or a conductor size, note which system type, circuit rating or installation condition the question states, and if it turns on a table, find the table rather than trusting memory: amendments move values.
Read the explanation on the questions you got right as well. A right answer for the wrong reason fails the next variant of the same question. After a mistake, read the matching note, then try the question again on another day.
Amendment 4 to BS 7671:2018 was published on 15 April 2026, and City & Guilds moved the qualification to 2382-26 to match it. The earlier 2382-22 closed to new registrations on 31 July 2026, and its last tests ran on 15 October 2026, the day the previous edition of the standard was withdrawn.
Revise from the Amendment 4 book. It brings every earlier amendment into one volume and adds new material, including a chapter on stationary batteries, a section on Power over Ethernet and a revised section on medical locations, and it moves energy efficiency into Part 8. Those additions are part of what 2382-26 can ask about.
City & Guilds publishes a sample test for 2382-26 rather than past papers. Save it for a final check once you have worked through every part of the book: a paper you have already seen measures memory, not the skill of finding and applying a regulation.

Yes. For City & Guilds 2382-26, the permitted reference book is a paper copy of BS 7671:2018+A4:2026. The On-Site Guide and Guidance Note 3 are not permitted for this exam, and electronic copies are not allowed. Bring a non-programmable calculator as well, and practise finding requirements in the book you will use.
City & Guilds sets it at approximately 60%, about 36 of the 60 questions. Treat a mock score as a guide to which parts of the book need work rather than a prediction.

BS 7671 itself does not require it: the IET says there is no requirement in the standard to do 18th Edition training. Employers, schemes and trade associations set their own expectations, and City & Guilds runs 2382-26 as a one-day refresher course or as the full qualification.
