The wiring regulations exam is about finding the right requirement and applying it to the installation in front of you. These original practice questions mix definitions, protective measures, device selection, cable factors and verification: read the condition in the question before choosing the figure or the rule.
Protection against electric shock and disconnection times
Earthing systems, main and supplementary bonding
Overcurrent devices, RCD types and cable selection
Inspection, testing, safe isolation and bathroom zones
Shock protection and earthing
Separate basic protection, fault protection and additional protection, then connect each to the system type. A TT installation relies on its own electrode and an RCD; a PME supply combines neutral and earth in the network and needs larger main bonding. Explain why the disconnection time or bonding size in a question follows from that arrangement.
Practise the coordination chain from design current to device rating to cable capacity, and the factors that shrink a cable’s capacity: grouping, ambient temperature and thermal insulation. For RCDs, match the device type to the residual current it must detect rather than to the circuit name.
Know the dead-test order and the test voltage and minimum value for insulation resistance, then the documents each activity produces. In a bathroom, work outwards from zone 0: which IP rating, which supply and which accessories each zone permits.
Find the regulation, then check the condition it depends on
BS 7671 assessments are usually open-book, so speed at locating a requirement matters more than memorising it. For a figure such as a disconnection time or a conductor size, note which system type, circuit rating or installation condition the question states before answering. Revisit the matching 18th Edition note after a mistake, then try again on another day.
Set up a free 18th Edition mock test
Preparing for a City & Guilds 2382 assessment or a refresher after an amendment? Use the free 18th Edition mock-test setup for a timed revision session, then review the reasoning behind each answer. Your centre confirms the edition, amendment and assessment arrangements that apply on your date.
The free test offers 5, 10 or 25 questions from this same set, with an optional practice timer. In Test mode, answers and explanations appear after you finish. Repeated tests reuse this bank, so a higher score can reflect familiarity.
Which edition of BS 7671 do these questions follow?
BS 7671:2018 as amended, with the notes explaining the current amendment status. Assessment centres state which edition and amendment apply on your assessment date, so revise the definitions and tables from that copy and use these questions to practise applying them.
No. These are original revision questions written by PlumbRevise. City & Guilds 2382 is the usual 18th Edition qualification, and its assessment is open-book with your own copy of BS 7671, so practise locating a requirement quickly and reading the condition attached to it.
How do I practise for an 18th Edition mock exam?
Answer the questions with immediate feedback first. Then use the Test setup on this page for 5, 10 or 25 questions with an optional timer and explanations at the end. Write down why you missed a question and which part of BS 7671 answers it.
Do I need an account to use the free questions?
No. The 25 free questions, their explanations and the mock-test setup work without signing up. An account saves your progress across devices; Premium unlocks the full 18th Edition question bank.
Are the 18th Edition revision notes free?
Yes. The 18th Edition notes are free to read in full, including the bathroom-zone and earthing topics these questions draw on. Read the note that matches a question you missed before trying it again.
All 25 questions on this page are free, with no account or card required. They are selected from the maintained 18th Edition wiring regulations question bank. Premium opens the full bank of 372 questions, more modules and Weak-Spot Review.
A free account saves the answers you give while signed in and lets you continue across devices. Without an account, this browser can remember your place for 30 days; it does not transfer earlier guest answers into an account. Signing up keeps the same free question allowance.
