The main refrigerant families, how their GWP compares, and how the A/B and 1 to 3 safety classes work.
HFCs
- Hydrofluorocarbons are the established F-gas refrigerants, and several remain in wide use.
- R404A has a very high GWP, close to 4000, and is being designed out of new systems.
- R410A is high GWP at around 2000, while R134a is around 1400.
- R32 is a single-component HFC with a much lower GWP, under 700, so it is now common in new split air-conditioning systems.
