Gosford Plus: installation and service checks

Note 4 of 11 · free to read

Apply the BFM Gosford Plus instructions to the fireplace opening, shelf, gas inlet, LPG supply, pilot and annual service.

Apply the right model instructions

These examples concern the natural-gas and propane variants of the BFM Gosford Plus inset live fuel-effect fire. Match the appliance's model, fuel and control version to its instructions. These are model-specific figures, not limits for every gas fire.

Opening and surround

The fireplace opening is 400–450 mm wide and 550–570 mm high. An oversized opening is brought within those dimensions with a suitable non-combustible surround, sealed to prevent leakage. A wide decorative trim does not do that job.

The opening and the surrounding flat sealing area are different measurements:

  • Fire opening: 400–450 mm wide and 550–570 mm high.
  • Minimum flat sealing area: 470 mm wide and 580 mm high.

A proprietary fireplace surround needs a temperature rating of at least 150 °C. The fire stands on a suitable hearth, never directly on carpet or another combustible floor finish.

Work out shelf clearance

For a combustible shelf projecting up to 150 mm, leave at least 200 mm above the top of the fire. Each additional 25 mm of projection adds 15 mm to that clearance.

For example, a 225 mm projection extends 75 mm beyond the starting allowance. That is three 25 mm steps: 3 × 15 = 45 mm extra. The required clearance is 200 + 45 = 245 mm. Measure upward from the top of the fire, not from the hearth.

Seal the gas entry and protect the LPG supply

Fit the supplied 45 mm grommet at the gas inlet point used on the firebox. Air entering through an unsealed opening can cause flame reversal and damage the controls. This seal closes the pipe-entry gap; it does not close a designed combustion-air opening.

For the LPG installation, the instructions require an over-pressure shut-off (OPSO) device to protect against failure of the primary regulator. A flow limiter or gas detector has a different function and does not satisfy that requirement.

Annual service checks

The specified annual service includes a visual check for debris in the chimney and fire opening, followed by a smoke test for a positive up-draught. Follow the complete service procedure for the control variant.

  • On natural gas, inspect and clean lint from the burner aeration port on the rear face of the burner, beside the injector.
  • On LPG, check the air box and venturis instead.
  • Check the ceramic coals. When replacement is needed, fit the complete genuine replacement set and its prescribed layout.
  • Complete the required gas-tightness check after servicing work.

Pilot replacement and relighting

The oxygen-sensing pilot's thermocouple position is set at the factory. A failed thermocouple therefore calls for the complete specified pilot assembly, not a separately positioned sensor or a universal substitute. Never adjust or defeat the assembly.

The user instructions require at least three minutes before attempting a relight after the fire goes out. If the spillage monitor operates repeatedly, leave the fire out of use and have a Gas Safe registered engineer investigate and correct the cause. Repeated relighting does not resolve the fault.

The relighting interval is separate from waiting until the fire has fully cooled before cleaning. For the flue checks, see the gas-fire spillage procedure and closure-plate and catchment checks.
