ID, AR or NCS: classifying an unsafe situation

The three GIUSP categories at a glance and how classification drives the action you take.

Classifying defects correctly is central to CCN1, and the headline framework is the Gas Industry Unsafe Situations Procedure, usually shortened to GIUSP.

Immediately Dangerous (ID) describes a situation that is an immediate danger to life or property, or would be if the appliance or installation were used. This is the most serious category.

At Risk (AR) describes a situation where one or more recognised faults exist that could, in certain circumstances, become a danger. It is serious but not at the immediate-danger level.

Not to Current Standards (NCS) covers installations that do not meet the current standards but are not ID or AR. The situation is recorded and explained so it can be put right, without the same urgency.

The point of classifying is to drive the right action. The procedure sets out warning the responsible person, giving advice, and, with the necessary permission, turning off and labelling dangerous installations. Always work to the current published procedure and gain permission before disconnecting.
