How to classify gas defects as Immediately Dangerous, At Risk, or Not to Current Standards and the safety steps to take.
Under the Gas Industry Unsafe Situations Procedure (GIUSP), any gas-fitting defect found during work must be assessed and classified to protect life and property:
- Immediately Dangerous (ID): Installations that constitute an immediate danger to life or property if left connected to the gas supply. You must seek permission to disconnect the appliance and cap the supply. If consent is refused, apply warning notices, attach an ID label, and contact the Gas Emergency Service Provider (gas transporter) immediately to turn off the supply.
- At Risk (AR): Installations where one or more defects exist which could constitute a danger to life or property if left in operation. Seek permission to isolate the appliance, apply an AR warning label, and provide a warning notice.
- Not to Current Standards (NCS): Installations that do not comply with current standards but are safe and do not present a danger. Record the defect and advise the customer.
