The immediate safety actions required when a gas escape is detected or reported.
Under GSIUR Regulation 37, if you detect or are notified of a gas escape in a property, you must take immediate action to protect life and property:
- Isolate the Supply: Shut off the gas at the Emergency Control Valve (ECV) or meter control immediately.
- Eliminate Ignition Sources: Do not operate any electrical switches (don't turn lights on or off), do not smoke, and do not use matches or naked flames.
- Ventilate: Open all windows and doors to allow the gas to disperse into the open air.
- Evacuate and Warn: Evacuate the premises and warn occupants of neighbouring properties if there is a risk of gas migrating.
- Emergency Contact: Call the national Gas Emergency Service Provider (transporter) immediately on the dedicated freephone line. If the leak is post-ECV and cannot be isolated or stopped, the transporter will attend to make the installation safe.
