Expansion and usable capacity
The gas cushion in a diaphragm vessel compresses as heated system water expands. The vessel must accept that expansion while keeping the hot operating pressure within the permitted range below the relief-valve setting. Insufficient usable capacity can cause discharge, but discharge alone does not prove a failed diaphragm.
