Purging: why it is done, where it goes, and what follows it

Displacing air or gas safely, why the in-between stage is the dangerous one, and the commissioning step people forget.

Purging changes the contents of a defined section: displacing air with fuel gas during commissioning, or removing gas when taking pipework out of service. A gas/air mixture can pass through its flammable range, and discharged fuel can mix with air outside the pipe. Control that risk throughout the operation.

Establish scope and quantity

Use the applicable procedure for the fuel, operating pressure, installation volume and location. UP/1B Edition 4 covers specified small installations; it is not a universal method for every LPG service pipe or vessel.

IGEM's Edition 4 clarification requires installation volume to be calculated for every purge, with purge volume = 1.5 × installation volume. The purge method itself has not been replaced by this formula. Required preparation, discharge arrangements and completion checks still apply.

For example, an established installation volume of 12 litres gives a purge volume of 18 litres. If IV is supplied in cubic metres, keep units consistent: 0.012 × 1.5 = 0.018 m³ = 18 litres. The volume is not a universal time; the actual method controls delivery and verification.

Do not transfer a tightness exception

An eligible existing-appliance loss below the smallest permissible limit for its fuel may not need an IV calculation solely for that comparison. If purging is then undertaken, IV still has to be calculated. A previous pressure result does not measure the amount to purge.

Plan safe discharge

Select the permitted method and discharge point for the actual fuel, volume and setting. Control ignition sources and ensure the required ventilation and dispersal. Avoid unsafe accumulation in confined or low spaces. A window being open does not by itself approve an indoor purge, and natural-gas assumptions cannot simply be transferred to LPG or LPG/air.

Completion and commissioning

Follow the applicable method, calculated quantity and completion checks. Early odour proves neither delivery of the required volume nor completion throughout the defined section. Do not substitute a naked flame, a remembered fixed time or an unverified universal concentration target.

For purging into service, tightness is established immediately beforehand. Permanent decommissioning has its own requirements. Afterwards, complete the specified restoration and appliance checks before handover; a burner lighting is not the whole commissioning process.
